While maintaining an active career as a baritone, music educator, conductor, and award-winning composer, Shavon Lloyd (b. 1997) has been praised as an “uber-talented” (Times Herald Record) artist. In demand as a guest conductor and clinician, he collaborates with ensembles and educational institutions across the country while maintaining a dynamic performance career in musical theatre and opera on stages throughout the United States and Europe. His growing catalog of commissioned works continues to expand through partnerships with professional choirs, reflecting a distinct and evolving artistic voice. Alongside his creative and performance work, Lloyd is deeply engaged in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within K–12 music education programs, fostering more inclusive and representative spaces for young musicians.
Since earning his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, Lloyd has distinguished himself as a sought-after guest conductor across New York State, working with elementary, middle, and high school honors ensembles. A dedicated educator, he spent several years as a high school chorus teacher and worked in New York City K–12 schools in Washington Heights, where he cultivated student-centered, inclusive choral programs. His professional service includes active involvement with the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), contributing to both the Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Representation (BEDR) Committee and the Composition/Songwriting Committee. An engaging and in-demand presenter, Lloyd has led sessions at conferences and professional workshops, focusing on culturally relevant pedagogy, empowering student musicians, and bridging the gap between traditional and evolving practices in music education.
Lloyd’s compositional voice first gained recognition in 2014 when, at age 17, he won the grand prize in the Manhattan Choral Ensemble’s New Music for New York composition competition with his piece Untitled. He continued to develop his craft at SUNY Potsdam under the mentorship of Dr. David Heuser, earning further acclaim with his choral work So Breaks the Sun, which won The 18th Street Singers’ national competition in Washington, D.C. and was premiered in July 2018. He went on to receive additional commissions from ensembles including the Washington Master Chorale, the Orpheus Chamber Singers, and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. His music has been commissioned by K–12 programs, collegiate ensembles, and established professional concert choirs, reflecting a growing national and international presence. His works have been performed internationally across the United States, Canada, South America, and, most recently, Africa. So Breaks the Sun appears as the title track on the first album by the Quava Vocal Group in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Shavon received his Master of Music in Vocal Performance from The Juilliard School in 2024. He has received several prizes in opera/musical theatre performance, including Opera Ebony and Opera Index, and winning the grand prize in The Classical Singer Competition for Pre-Professionals in Musical Theatre. In his time there, Lloyd performed several roles including Händel's Atalanta (Nicandro), Purcell's King Arthur (Grimbald/Cold Genius), Puccini's Gianni Schicchi (Betto), and Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito (Publio). He has also performed in several professional productions, covering the role of Il Sagrestano in Puccini's Tosca and performing the role of Simon in an all-Black production of Joplin's Treemonisha (Opera Theatre of St. Louis). In 2024, Shavon made his Opera Saratoga debut as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls. The following year, he returned to Saratoga to sing as Kodaly in She Loves Me, and Luther in Chris Cerrone and Stephanie Fleischmann’s In a Grove. A lover of concert music, Lloyd has collaborated with several ensembels as a baritone soloist, including The Crane Chorus and Symphony Orchestra, The Greenwich Choral Society, St. Louis Symphony, Cantori NY, and The Cecilia Chorus of New York City. Within these collaborations, Shavon has sung such repertoire as Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Mozart’s C-Minor Mass, Bonds’ Ballad of the Brown King, and Hailstork’s Crispus Attucks. In 2024, Lloyd made his European Debut with Cercle Bach/L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève Ensemble in collaboration with conductor, Mark Shapiro, to premiere Daron Hagen’s Everyone, Everywhere, a piece commissioned by The United Nations in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He is featured on the Naxos album, Everyone, Everywhere, singing art songs by Daron Hagen. In 2026, Lloyd made his Carnegie Hall debut, singing Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Mark Buller and Leah Lax’s Mass in Exile with The Cecilia Chorus of New York. Lloyd is a Novick Career Grant recipient.
Lloyd currently lives in New York City, where he is a Senior Associate Conductor and Artistic Coordinator for the National Children’s Chorus.
